Session Description

It’s difficult to imagine a life without social media, what with friends and family posting on Facebook and headlines filled with the latest presidential outburst on Twitter. Love or loathe it, the online community is here to stay.

Take-up in education has been slow– not by the students of course, but in terms of teaching, learning and assessment. In other parts of the college, marketing teams are making the most of social platforms to push the college offer out to a wider audience, but real opportunities lie in tapping into the social conversation that exists online and bringing it into the classroom as part of delivery and our own professional development.

The Social Media 101 workshop aims to give you a crash course in engaging with this world of likes, tweets, pins and posts. It will be a hands-on affair as we build your social profile and set you a series of tasks to develop your digital skills using the most popular social platforms. Along the way, we’ll show you how to use images, audio and video to enhance your message and how simple automated tools can help you manage your social presence. We’ll also cover how social media has been used to deliver the curriculum, bringing in practical examples you can use with your students and explore what options exist when it comes to assessment.

The workshop is being led by Jon Gill, who has delivered #MadeOnAMobile workshops for us in the past, and with his love of ‘social media on the move’, all you need to participate is a mobile phone or tablet (with data access).
There are only 20 places on this workshop, so make sure to book your place early as these will go fast!
Included on the day:

  • Overview of the main social media platforms;
  • Exploring the dynamics of a being a visitor/resident online;

  • Making the most of multimedia, images, audio and video;
  • Using automated scripts to manage your social presence;
  • Examples of how social media can be used in learning, teaching and assessment
