 This Week's Virtual Bridge Programme

Tuesday 4 August
Online Induction
Dr Lina Petrakieva and David McArthur, Glasgow Caledonian University

New students need to be taught about the digital infrastructure of their universities, something that's usually covered at the start of term with large face-to-face induction groups. At GCU, we have moved the process online, inviting students to complete introductory tasks on their own devices in their own time. Feedback from students confirms that they value this approach which gives them the information they need before they even step foot on the campus.

Friday 7 August
City Open Learn
Scott Harrison, City of Glasgow College

As we prepare to welcome new students to start a new academic term with us, we have had to rethink our approach to induction. City Open Learn is part of that redesign; a standalone instance of our Moodle VLE which new students who haven’t undergone formal enrolment can access and go through all the information they need before starting their course. The platform also mirrors what the students will use in their course, so gives them the opportunity to get comfortable with the systems they’ll be using.

In this session, we’ll take you through the student experience, describe how we designed the environment to welcome all students and what our plans for City Open Learn are going forward.
